Pontefract is a failing British colony, with a shrinking population and a very uncertain future.
Initially developed using loans aquired from an army of small investors, poor planning and corruption lead to much of the loan disappearing before Pontefract’s infrastructure could
be completed.
The world is situated quite far from the life zone, where solar energy keeps surface conditions warm enough for water to exist in liquid form. Pontefract is only inhabitable due to a
runaway greenhouse effect. Much of the surface of the world is a muddy bog, with native life no more complex than weeds and moss analogues.
In 2571 flooding occurred, which due to poor planning and no emergency funds lead to the destruction of several low lying cities.
Edenist communities orbiting Josland provided emergency funds with which to aquire new housing. The strain on the colonial economy was to much. In the past thirty years, rather than
rebuild the damage, the locals have gone to join Edenists in droves. The Unified Christian church sent a relief effort in order to try and stop the embarrassing exodus. The effort couldn’t do anything to solve the
economic problems, so failed to have any effect.
The consensus is that Pontefract will be completely depopulated within 200 years unless massive reinvestment is forthcoming.
