Syndicate Rules

What, you might ask; does a comic have to do with Alternate History?  Sure, I’ve reviewed a handful of Elseworld comics, such as Act of God, but why a mainstream comic?

Syndicate Rules is an 8-part story about the third conflict between the JLA – Justice League of America – and their evil doppelgangers, the Crime Syndicate of America.  The CSA hails from an alternate dimension – and now they think that the League has launched an attack on them.  Naturally, they come to our dimension to punish the league, while another threat is looming at the edge of the cosmos.

So, why did I like this comic?  The first and most enjoyable part was a glimpse into the CSA’s world.  Ruled by the CSA, it depends upon the Favour Bank; an unbreakable rule that anyone who gives you a favour must be repaid, no matter the cost.  The second part is that it was nice to see the JLA handed their heads for once, not managing to jail the villains as they normally do.

If you’re not into comics, you won’t like it.  But its worth a read.

The members of the Crime Syndicate are:

  • Ultraman: the counterpart of Superman. Pre-Crisis, Ultraman came from a Krypton that hadn't exploded, and for whom kryptonite only increased his superpowers, rather than draining them. Post-Crisis, Ultraman was a human astronaut given superpowers after an encounter with aliens.
  • Superwoman: the counterpart of Wonder Woman. Superwoman gained her powers from her world's Amazons, and thus has similar powers to Wonder Woman. Post-Crisis, she is the anti-matter Earth's version of Lois Lane.
  • Owlman: the counterpart of Batman. Pre-Crisis, Owlman possessed a limited range of mind control powers; post-Crisis, Owlman's origin was fleshed out, with his powers replaced by a range of technological and physical skills, much like The Batman.
  • Johnny Quick: the counterpart of the Flash. Quick has super-speed powers.
  • Power Ring: the counterpart of Green Lantern. Power Ring gained his ring of power from a Tibetan monk named Volthoom, and has powers similar to the Silver Age Green Lantern.
