The Battle of the Vistula marked a critical turning point in the war in the East for both the Soviet and the Germans. Until then Hitler had envisioned making short work of what he considered an inferior foe; in his more optimistic moments he’d even anticipated the possibility of driving the Red Army out of Czechoslovakia and Poland altogether by the beginning of May and invading the Soviet Union before the first of June.
