          into active service with the Kriegsmarine’s U-boat fleet. These tankers made
          it easier for the rest of the U-boat arm to more aggressively prosecute its
          offensive against Britain and also to confront American naval vessels in their
          own waters. Had they been used properly, they could have turned the tide of
          the war sharply in Germany’s favor; however, Hitler’s judgment where these
          tankers were concerned was no better than his grasp of the strategic situation

         raging on Luzon tonight as the island’s defenders fight to repel the invaders....
