From the October 8th, 1995 broadcast of ABC’s Good Morning America:

The death toll in the HRV epidemic currently plaguing much of

southeast Asia has now risen to 190 with news that a fifth South

Korean national has died in Seoul from the lethal respiratory virus.

This chilling news comes as Australia faces the possibility of an

HRV outbreak on its own soil...

The already perilous refugee situation facing the Australian government

has become even more so with the entry into Australia of the Haiphong

respiratory virus responsible for leaving nearly 220 people dead since May;

the deadly contagion is believed to have infected the country by way of a

refugee ship which landed at Carnavon more than a week ago. Australian

Liberal Party leader John Howard gave a televised speech today urging the

federal government in Canberra to expel all refugees from the country

without delay and authorize the Australian Navy to sink refugee ships if

they tried to enter the country’s major ports; Howard, who is currently

campaigning to become Australia’s next prime minister, said in his speech

that he would have already instituted such measures weeks ago if he were

in charge of the government...

UN health officials say that the death toll in the HRV epidemic which is

currently ravaging parts of Asia and has also recently struck Australia and

the United States may surpass 250 before the end of this week. The deadly

resipiratory virus, believed to have originated in Vietnam back in May, has

so far eluded all efforts to find a cure or vaccine...In a related development

Australian naval patrol boats earlier today turned back a refugee ship from

Asia which was attempting to land Afghani asylum seekers near the port

of Carnavon, the site at which the virus is thought to have first gotten into

Australia....

case of the lethal Haiphong virus may have been diagnosed in the

According to an AP dispatch out of Canberra, the latest to

succumb to the disease is a 57-year-old Rwandan man who

had been in detention at an Australian refugee camp for the

past three months...
