2001 Braun, the author of 2001: A Space Odyssey & its sequels, is immortalised by a "monolith" memorial dedicated by Arthur C. Clarke on Europa.

Arthur C. Clarke resigns as Secretary-General of the United Commonwealth of Planets (UCP). He is replaced by the UK’s UCP Cabinet representative Tony Blair in a close election over Russia’s Boris Yeltsin.

UCP orders the Commonwealth Defence Force (CDF) to start patrolling beyond the 25 light year border towards the Blurgiss system some 250 light years away. A limit of 100 light years is placed on the CDF from the current border so not to alert the Blurgiss of this action.

CDF starts to patrol this 100 light years region & declares a military restriction zone (MRZ). No civilian entry is permitted.

United Planets Explorations (UPX) is permitted to survey the MRZ. The early missions find no life, yet it will take years to explore the entire zone.

MicroGates is ordered, by the UCP Economic Court to split into two corporations. Bill Gates appeals this court order to the Supreme Court. The Y2K bug compensation trials are found in favour of the defendant MicroGates.

2002 UPX discovers a habitable planet 20 light years from Pacifica. It is a planet the size of Mars, but has water & atmosphere similar to Earth. It has 3 continents, one of which resembles Australia. As a result it is named Australis.

UCP annexes Australis & extends the border from Pacifica to include the new planet plus 5 light years. CDF is ordered to include Australis in Pacifica’s defence zone.

CDF tempts to establish a base on Australis, but discovers seismic activity too strong in their first attempts. Finally only the large continent (ironically not the Australia look alike) is stable enough to allow permanent settlements.

2003 UPX discovers in the MRZ a dead planet (D1). It is some 75 light years from Earth. Analysis shows that an intelligent pre- Magnetic Space Warp Drive (MSWD) civilisation once thrived on the planet. Further information indicates weapons of mass destruction where used. Their origin appears to be Blurgiss.

UPX informs UCP of the dead planet. This information is kept secret from the public.

UCP opens Australis to civilian colonisation. Not many civilians accept the offer; Eden, Sierra, & Saturn Prime remain the favourite destinations.

After a lengthy legal process MicroGates looses its Supreme Court appeal. MicroGates keeps its core components & sets the rest up as UniNet.

2004 UCP secretly decides to withhold information about how humanity discovered MSWD after UPX discovers that the Vargary (VF) developed such technology themselves. It is thought that the VF would pull out of the Mutual Defence Treaty (MDT) if they discover humanity is not really technologically advanced, but in reality thieves.

The Braun 2001:A Space Odyssey series is translated into Vargary, but with one addition: in the 2061 book humans develop MSWD, which runs contrary to the original book. Furthermore, the VF are told the series is a somewhat semiofficial of the last 50 years of human development & only the dates have been changed. The 2001 series becomes extremely popular throughout the VF.

2005 CDF listening post near Australis discovers an unidentified signal some 75 light years away. It is determined not to be of Blurgiss origin.

UCP orders UPX to send probes to determine the origin of this new signal.

An ex USA president Bill Clinton is arrested by the Commonwealth Police Service (CPS) for trying to smuggle cigars through Eden customs. He is fined $250.

Eden’s population reaches 175 million.

Sierra’s population reaches 57 million.

Saturn Prime’s population reaches 11 million.

Pacifica’s population reaches 6 million.

2006 UPX discovers in the MRZ another dead planet (D2) some 80 light years from Earth. Like D1, it appears to have been home to an intelligent civilisation prior to MWSD technology. Again the Blurgiss presence is identified.

UCP expresses concern at finding these dead planets & orders CDF to plan for a possible future war against the Blurgiss.

UCP informs VF about the dead plants. VF offers military assistance in any future offensive against the Blurgiss, but requires trade liberalisation in return.

UPX probes discover the location of the signal intercepted at Australis. UPX wishes to make contact, but UCP is concerned about the reaction of the new aliens. More probes are sent.

2007 UPX discover that the new aliens are called the Lyonies (LF). They appear to be peaceful & operate within a small federation of their home planet & some colonies.

UCP orders UPX to send a scout ship to make contact. UCP also orders CDF to send a battlecruiser as escort, but not to reveal themselves unless required.

UPX contacts the LF & negotiations commence. The LF, however, discover the CDF battlecruiser Nelson lurking nearby & breaks up the negotiations & almost open fire. A last ditch effort by the UPX ambassador Kofi Annan saves the day when he tells the LF of the Blurgiss. The LF are stunned by the evilness of the Blurgiss and accepts Kofi Annan’s sincere apologies.

VF & UCP sign the Common Economic Treaty (CET) to liberalise trade. The MDT is renegotiated and becomes MDT2, which permits offensive as well as defensive military support by either party.

2008 LF & UCP ambassadors meet on Earth & sign the Mutual Peace Treaty (MPT).

VF & LF ambassadors meet on Earth & likewise sign the MPT.

Trade between UCP & VF flourishes. UniNet purchases some exclusive rights to VF technology.

Bill Gates is not amused when the VF technology company VargCom purchases 15% of MicroGates shares.

2009 UPX discovers another dead planet (D3) some 90 light years from Earth. Like D1 & D2, it too has been killed through the use of Blurgiss weaponry. Again the same pattern is evident.

UCP upon receiving the latest report from UPX, orders CDF to enlarge the 4th Fleet (long distance assault fleet) in order for it to begin offensive operations against the Blurgiss.

UCP orders UPX not to conduct any action that may alert the Blurgiss of UCP activity in the MRZ or elsewhere.

2010 Tony Blair is replaced as UCP SG by Japanese Cabinet representative Suzi Mikawa who narrowly defeated Richard Butler from Australia.

UPX discovers a habitable planet some 20 light years from Saturn Prime. Like the other habitable planets it has life, but no advanced life forms. It is rather arid, but could support millions of humans nonetheless. It is named Barrens.

UCP annexes Barrens & orders CDF to include it in the Eden defence zone. Furthermore, Barrens is immediately opened for colonisation.

Few colonists immigrate to Barrens as other planets are more appealing. However, UPX & CDF establish experimental bases there in order to develop technology & weapons away from the public view. Within the year 1 million humans live on the planet (mostly military etc).

Earth’s population hovers at under 6 billion.

Eden’s population reaches 250 million.

Sierra’s population reaches 67 million.

Saturn Prime’s population reaches 19 million.

Pacifica’s population reaches 8 million.

Australis’s population reaches 1 million.

2011 UPX finds a habitable planet near the 100 light year limit within the MRZ. Analysis indicates an organised civilisation that has developed to approximately 1900AD Earth standard. UPX names the planet Innocence (the local name is Terra). A scan of this solar system discovers a monolith at its edge. When the UPX Endeavour approaches the monolith a signal is detected being sent to the Blurgiss.

UCP is furious at UPX for violating its orders & puts UPX under executive command. UCP demands a most secret inquiry into UPX over this matter.

UCP declares the MRZ a protectorate & quarantines Innocence. No information about Innocence is permitted to be released to the public.

CDF reports to UCP that their spy probes has detected Blurgiss activity in relation to Innocence.

UCP orders CDF to send the 4th Fleet to defend Innocence.

VF is informed of the Innocence situation. They offer any help they can, but express concern about what appears to be the recklessness of UPX.

CDF 3rd Fleet intercepts & destroys an asteroid heading for Eden big enough to kill the planet. Thankfully, all that hits Eden is small particles that light up the sky as thousands of shooting stars. The day is declared a planetary holiday.

2012 UCP Secret Court of Inquiry declares that UPX did what it could in order to avoid detection.

UCP returns command to UPX but orders it out of the MRZ for now.

CDF 4th Fleet is on station at Innocence although they keep their distance from the planet.

First Battle of Innocence. A Blurgiss task force of 20 cruisers arrives, but are surprised to see the 112 ships of the CDF 4th Fleet waiting for them. They are ordered to surrender but refuse. Battle follows & all 20 cruisers are destroyed. The CDF, however, looses 30 ships in the battle.

VF & LF are informed about the First Battle of Innocence. LF are impressed that the UCP took a stand against the Blurgiss & won. They become a signature to the MDT2.

VF sends a 32 ship fleet to relieve the CDF 4th fleet so that rotation of exhausted personnel can occur.

When the troops come home word about the battle becomes public. The public at first celebrates the victory, but then turns on the government for being secretive. Riots soon start & the CPS does its best to keep the situation under control. Eden, though, threatens to withdraw from the UCP. Sierra & Saturn Prime likewise copy Eden’s threat.

Suzi Mikawa resigns as SG of the UCP. The elected Assembly demands reforms to both the Senate & SG. The SG becomes office of the President who is directly elected by the citizens for a 5 year term. Likewise the Senate is popularly elected. Phillip Chang of China becomes the first elected President of the UCP.

UCP orders UPX & CDF to analyse all data on the Blurgiss.

2013 UPX discovers a habitable planet 87 light years rimward from Australis on the edge of the rim. It somewhat resembles Sierra in appearance & climate. It is named Omega.

UPX & CDF establishes a base on the planet. Numerous minerals & scarce elements are found in abundance.

UCP immediately annexes Omega & increases the border from Australis. Omega is opened up for colonisation with a clear policy of mining the planet for its resources.

CDF spy probes identify that the Blurgiss are assembling a large fleet. Analysis suggests it is heading for Innocence. UCP is informed of this situation.

UCP requests LF for military support under the MDT2. LF sends a small fleet of 22 ships to Innocence.

MicroGates is now 40% owned by VF share holders. MicroGates appeals to the UCP Economic Court, but is rebuffed by citing the terms of the CET.

2014 CDF requests UCP to release the 5th Fleet from duties around Pacifica. 5th Fleet assembles at Innocence along with the 4th , VF & LF fleets. The Fleet becomes commonly known as InComFt.

LF signs the CET. Although trade has occurred previously, liberalisation doubles this trade within 1 year.

The Complete Works of Shakespeare & the Braun 2001 series is translated into LF. Both are extremely popular.

UniNet declares record profits. MicroGates sues UniNet for copyright breaches. UniNet counter sues.

CDF & UPX release the Joint Blurgiss Report. It identifies the Blurgiss running a slave empire dominated by them. It appears they have scouted an area some 250 light years from their planet & left the monolith in solar systems were future civilisations may become rivals. A cruel tactic is used whereby just as that civilisation develops technology that may see them leave their solar system they find the monolith. Once found the Blurgiss arrived to either enslave or destroy their potential rival. It appears that Earth survived because it was lucky.

2015 Second Battle of Innocence. The Blurgiss battle fleet of 206 ships arrives at Innocence. The InComFt of 246 ships immediately attacks. Although the Blurgiss are defeated, some 50 of their ships survive & withdraw. InComFl suffers significant casualties, but intelligence analysis suggests the Blurgiss will not be able to conduct further offensive actions for decades to come.

CDF quietly reports to UCP, while victory celebrations occur, that their own loses also ensure that no offensive against the Blurgiss can be conducted.

MircoGates court case against UniNet is dismissed. However, UniNet’s counter legal action succeeds. MircoGates files for bankruptcy protection.

2016 RMZ is patrolled by InComFt. All is quiet.

It is discovered that the LF edition is the original of Braun’s 2001 series & not the rewritten VF version. The LF let it slip & VF starts asking questions.

Bill Gates retires from public life.

2017 UCP admits to the VF & LF how humanity gained MWSD. The reaction varies.

LF express their disgust at being involved with thieves. However, they do not break off relations with UCP due to the benefits in trade & the MDT2.

VF dismiss the LF outburst & are amazed that, in reality, humans are still barbarians yet have achieved so much.

The original Braun 2001 series is released in VF. A History of Mankind 1945-2000 is released for VF study & is translated into VF. Both become overnight best sellers. VF are emotionally moved by the human experience & sacrifice of the last 50 years & suggest closer relations.

President Phillip Chang is narrowly re-elected.

2018 VF & UCP begin negotiations about "closer relations".

UPX discovers a habitable planet some 20 light years from Barrens. It is similar to both Eden & Earth & resembles Earth some 5 million years ago. It is named Utopia.

UCP annexes Utopia and orders CDF to defend it through the establishment of a new fleet. UCP immediately opens Utopia for colonisation. 2 million colonists arrive in the first year.

CDF establish a base & the 6th Fleet, even though its resources are still strained after the two Innocence Battles.

Utopian colonists find that some of the local life forms, similar to dinosaurs, are deathly. "Clearing" operations of Utopian dinosaurs occur in contrary to UCP environmental guidelines.

2019 Environmental groups protest the "clearing" operations on Utopia. Soon fighting breaks out on Utopia between the groups. CPS make several arrests & restore peace.

UCP orders an inquiry into events on Utopia.

VF & UCP negotiations continue.

2020 Utopia Inquiry recommends large National Parks be created that cover 50% of the planet. Entry into the National Parks is forbidden. A further 25% of the planet becomes Reserves that may be entered for recreation, but killing or clearing of Utopian life forms is forbidden. The remaining 25% may be inhabited which reflects the part of the surface of Utopia that has been cleared.

VF & UCP negotiations continue.

Earth’s population hovers at under 6 billion.

Eden’s population reaches 481 million.

Sierra’s population reaches 99 million.

Saturn Prime’s population reaches 28 million.

Pacifica’s population reaches 10 million.

Utopia’s population reaches 4 million.

Australis’s population reaches 2 million.

Barrens’ population reaches 2 million.

Omega’s population reaches 1 million.

2021 Representatives from Utopia, Pacifica, Australis, Barrens & Omega are accepted into the UCP government.

UCP & VF announce a comprehensive program of integration. No particular timetable is defined, but a loose confederation, starting in 2023, will eventually lead to a single united federation.

LF is invited to join the confederation. LF politely declines.

UPX find 2 more dead planets in the MRZ.

2022 UCP holds fresh elections. Susanna Delchenkov of Russia narrowly defeats Sunny Iman of India for President.

Environmental protesters disrupt mining operations in Omega. Rioting soon starts. CPS intervenes & peace returns while no arrests are made.

VF awards its highest honour medal to all human survivors of the 1982 Blurgiss attack on Earth.

2023 Establishment of the Common Confederation of Planets (CCP). Both VF & UCP retain separate sovereignty, but travel & trade is free between the two. Conflicting laws are repealed & anti-discrimination laws introduced. A member of each other’s government is permitted to observe the other’s Cabinet meetings & may give advice on any topic if asked.

CCP has a Commission (CCPC) established to oversee the integration of the current & future reforms.

MDT2 remains separate from the CCP.

UCP sets up an inquiry into the mining operations.

2024 UCP Omega Mining Inquiry expresses concerns at the mining practices. UCP orders environmental reforms to mining as a result.

MicroGates, UniNet & numerous other companies, including VF ones, are found in breach of several trading laws of the CCP. Confusion reigns, however, as to which jurisdiction is to police such areas.

CCPC establishes the Confederation Securities Police Agency (CSPA). It has little power except to investigate & report back to the CCPC which inturn reports to the respective sovereign government.

2025 UPX discovers a habitable planet some 50 light years from Sierra. Its appearance is similar to Earth. It is inhabited by a pre-industrial civilisation. UPX name it Argie.

UCP immediately quarantines Argie & declares it a protectorate. Any contact or entry into the Argie solar system is forbidden.

UPX is permitted to set up an observation base in the Argie solar system.

LF expresses an interest to join CCP. Negotiations begin.

2026 UCP begins debate on contacting the Blurgiss. After much argument, President Susanna Delchenkov orders UPX to send a "diplomatic" probe to initiate peaceful contact.

UPX sends the "diplomatic" probe to the Blurgiss but there is no reply.

President Susanna Delchenkov’s peace policy courses controversy with the public.

LF & CCP negotiations continue.

2027 In the Presidential election Susanna Delchenkov is defeated by American John Carter. It is considered Delchenkov lost due to her peace policy. Carter, who’s grandfather was a President of USA, quietly supported the Delchenkov peace initiative, but does not follow it up.

CDF reports that InComFt indicates there is no Blurgiss activity. Spy probes suggest that the Blurgiss are staying well within their borders.

LF announces they will join the CCP in 2030.

2028 UPX discovers 3 more dead planets in the MRZ.

UCP is informed of the 3 new dead planets & all consideration of a peace policy is dropped.

UCP orders "next generation" warships (NGW) as a result.

VF is requested to join the NGW program. VF accepts the offer.

2029 UPX discovers a habitable planet 15 light years from Argie. Its appearance is similar to Sierra, but like Argie, it is inhabited by a pre-industrial civilisation. UPX names it Cousin.

UCP immediately quarantines Cousin & enlarges the Argie protectorate, which inturn becomes the Peace Protectorate Zone (PPZ). Any contact or entry into the PPZ is forbidden.

UPX is permitted to keep & set up observation bases in the PPZ.

2030 LF enters the CCP.

UCP invites LF to join the NGW program. LF accepts the offer.

Earth’s population has stagnated at 5.8 billion thanks to migration.

Eden’s population reaches 968 million

Sierra’s population reaches 112 million

Saturn Prime’s population reaches 34 million.

Utopia’s population reaches 31 million

Pacifica’s population reaches 11 million.

Australis’s population reaches 3 million.

Barrens’ population reaches 2 million

Omega’s population reaches 2 million

2031 NGW tests near Barrens prove disastrous. Numerous personnel killed. Barrens narrowly escapes sever environmental damage.

Environmental groups protest the NGW program.

UCP orders further testing moved to another location.

CDF suggests D1 in the MRZ. LF & VF concur.

2032 President John Carter is re-elected.

NGW program resumes tests secretly on D1.

The Olympic Games is held on Eden. It is the first time that Earth has not held this event. Not surprisingly Eden sneaks in the most gold medal victories.

2033 CCPC recommends some reforms to further the integration process. However, all three members defer & are satisfied with the current arrangement.

2034 UPX discovers a habitable planet slightly smaller than Mars, in a unique solar system, some 15 light years from Utopia. Although it has a main sun, a much smaller sun orbits the larger one. Furthermore the planet, which is 75% water, orbits the smaller sun. It is named Duel due to its suns.

UPX establishes a base on Duel.

UCP annexes Duel & opens the planet for colonisation. Within the first year 1 million colonists migrate to Duel. Tourism instantly becomes the planet’s chief industry as 4 million tourists visit in the first year.

CDF starts to patrol the Duel area which becomes part of the Utopia defence zone.

2035 UPX discovers that the radiation levels on Duel are higher than normal. Although not overly dangerous, skin cancer warnings are issued. Migration slows as a result but high tourist visits continue.

UCP sends the Commonwealth Health Commission (CHC) to confirm UPX findings.

CHC confirms UPX warnings, but comforts the public that current medical treatments are more than adequate when dealing with the radiation of Duel.

2036 CHC announces that they have discovered a gene in Duel’s indigenous life forms that makes them immune to various cancers. Dr Marcus Zeigler is credited with the finding & announces that a universal vaccine will be available by 2040.

The Olympic Games is held on Sierra. For the first time teams from the VF & LF participate. Eden again narrowly wins the most gold medals followed by VF & LF. However, the Sierra Olympic Committee goes broke due to the cost of holding the Games.

2037 In the UCP elections, Henry Mandela of Southern Africa defeats Katherine Comte of France for the Presidency.

NGW program produces its first warship. It is the size of a frigate with the fire power of a cruiser. They are called Freestars.

CDF, VF & LF immediately order Freestars to replace their respective frigates.

2038 UPX intercepts an unidentified signal originating some 100 light years from Argie in the PPZ.

CDF starts patrolling the PPZ as a result.

UCP orders UPX to send probes in order to identify the origin of the signal.

CCPC confers on the matter & considers that the decision to make contact should be made by CCP. UCP concurs.

UPX reports back to UCP & CCP that the probes discovered a small space faring civilisation that appears peaceful. CCP begin discussion on the contact process.

2039 CCP orders UPX to make contact. However, LF & VF personnel accompany the mission.

UPX London makes contact with the unknown civilisation called the Drey. Unfortunately, London in the Drey Language is a dreadful insult & first negotiations are rocky. Nonetheless, due to the obvious joint mission of the CCP, the Drey accept the cultural differences. Ambassadors are exchanged & the Joint Friendship Treaty (JFT) is signed.

UCP ratifies the JFT as does LF & VF. The Drey (DC), who have a central government, are somewhat confused at first due to the loose federal structure of the CCP, but appreciate the politics. They too centuries ago went through a similar period prior to centralisation.

2040 UCP commences separate negotiations with DC. Within these negotiations, DC is given a full briefing of the Blurgiss.

VF & LF likewise begin separate negotiations. Similar briefings of the Blurgiss confirm the UCP briefing.

DC expresses concern about the Blurgiss & offers to join the MDT2. Their offer is accepted. DC also signs the CET.

The Olympic Games is held on Utopia, albeit with funding from the CCP. Eden again narrowly wins the most gold medals over China & LF.

Earth’s population has remained at 5.8 billion.

Eden’s population reaches 1.42 billion

Sierra’s population reaches 133 million

Utopia’s population reaches 65 million

Saturn Prime’s population reaches 39 million.

Pacifica’s population reaches 12 million.

Duel’s population reaches 5 million.

Australis’s population reaches 4 million.

Omega’s population reaches 3 million

Barrens’ population remains at 2 million

Mars, Alpha Four, Earth Moon, other small colonies & ships population reaches 32 million

2041 NGW releases its latest warship. It is a battlecruiser of unequal power know as the Crusader Class . Although highly expensive, it is at least 5 times more powerful than current ships. CDF, VF & LF order respective numbers to add to their current fleets.

UCP & DC sign the PPZ Treaty. UCP continues to act as protector, while DC can send research missions into the PPZ.

VF & LF also sign the PPZ Treaty. They likewise can send research missions into the PPZ.

2042 UCP elections include representatives from Duel. President Henry Mandela is re-elected for a second term.

CCPC recommends reforms to the CCP to further the next step of integration. All three parties defer suggesting that consideration should be given for DC joining prior to any further integration.

CCP invites DC to join, but they defer to negotiations.

2043 CDF reports that there is some Blurgiss activity heading towards the MRZ.

UCP issues an alert & InComFt gains reinforcements from the MTD2 members including the DC.

A small encounter occurs near the MRZ border between 5 NGW Freestars & the same number of Blurgiss cruisers. The Blurgiss are repulsed losing 2 cruisers in the process. It becomes obvious that the NGW technology is far superior to the latest Blurgiss designs.

CCP & DC begin negotiations.

2044 The Olympic Games are held on Saturn Prime with funding from CCP. For the first time DC also participates. USA wins the most gold medals by 1 over China then Eden tied with VF.

In the spirit of the Games, President Henry Mandela suggests a peace mission be sent via a probe to the Blurgiss. Debate soon starts, but many agree after the convincing victory in 2043, that the Blurgiss may open some dialogue or be crushed.

UPX sends a probe on behalf of the MDT2 members to the Blurgiss, although little is expected.

Blurgiss reply for a cease fire & agree to open dialogue.

CCP & DC continue negotiations.

2045 MDT2 members agree to open dialogue via a probe with the Blurgiss. A meeting on the border of the MRZ is recommended. Negotiations go back & forth via probes as to the exactly location & rules for the meeting. Only one battlecruiser is permitted at the initial meeting per side. The meeting will take place 2 light years from Innocence in the solar system coded as Papa50.

DC announces that it will join the CCP in 2050.

2046 The Papa50 meeting takes place. Both sides do not trust the other and battle almost commences at first sight. However, the UCP Broadsword Crusader Class battlecruiser is clearly more than a match for the Blurgiss battlecruiser & basic negotiations commence. Only two items are agreed upon. A cease fire will continue & that a diplomatic base be jointly built on planet Papa50-3. The base is halved & each half is to be manned by unarmed diplomatic staff. Only one battlecruiser from each side maybe present within the Papa50 solar system at any one time. Any more would be considered an act of war.

MDT2 members agree to the conditions, although no treaty is actually signed.

InComFt stays at wartime alert regardless of the cease fire.

2047 Negotiations between MDT2 & Blurgiss commence on Papa50-3.

Although President Henry Mandela is extremely popular in the UCP due to his successful peace initiative, alas his second term has finished & cannot be re-elected.

UCP presidential elections are historic. The Eden candidate Daniel McBride wins in a narrow margin to Brazil’s Paulo Rodregis. Debate begins as to where the new President will reside, but McBride mores to Geneva, Earth where the Office of the UCP President is located.

2048 CHC announces new findings about a condition that has been slowly developing in some inhabitants of Duel. Jokingly referred to as Looney Duel Toons, cases of insanity have been slowly increasing since colonisation. CHC concludes it is due to the twin suns that ensures that Duel’s surface has sunlight almost 80% of the time. Psychological research is currently under way & successful treatment is assured soon.
