2201 United Defence Forces (UDF) reorganised what remained of their fleets. Since the siege began on Earth, its shipyards had been churning out fighters, Improved FreeStars & destroyers to complement the five battlecruisers & ten cruisers that stayed behind for planetary security. These smaller ships are often engaged in daily skirmishing as the Zargah try to infiltrate the BlackStar minefield protecting the planet.

Meanwhile, the space dockyards around Lyonies rapidly built whatever warships they could. Improved Invincible class battlecruisers are worked on day & night. As a result, 3rd Fleet recovers its numbers in a short period of time.

A similar story is repeated in the old MRZ. Although the dockyards at Nirvana & Renaissance can only build small warships, such as FreeStars & destroyers, the huge facilities at D1 of Next Generation Warships (NGW) churn out Dreadnoughts & Improved Invincibles as fast as they can. As a result, the UDF reconstitute the 4th Fleet at Nirvana. 9th Fleet, thanks to the intense building program at D1, becomes the most powerful fleet in the UDF.

The fleets are:

1st Fleet - Earth
2nd Fleet - Omega
3rd Fleet - Lyonies
4th Fleet - Nirvana
8th Fleet - Lyonies
9th Fleet - D1 NGW

2202 NGW & United Planetary Explorations (UPX) develop three fundamental breakthroughs of technology. Although not weapons, they become central instruments for the future of the war.

The first is code named Indorra (Intelligent Network Detection Of Radioactive Re-Analysis). By using BigEar technology, & years of analysis of the Zargah, an extremely accurate tracking system comes online. It has a range of 100 light years & tracks the magnetic signal of any ship using its Magnetic Space Warp Drive (MSWD) engines. Indorra becomes invaluable for the UDF in preparing defensive & offensive action. Indorra stations are quickly established on Omega, Fin, Lyonies, Earth & D1. They have the ability of communicating with each other & the fleets via the second breakthrough.

Code named BigMouth, the second breakthrough permits extreme high speed communication. Previously a signal would take 7 days to reach Vargary from Earth. BigMouth cuts this time to 7 minutes. Now a Zargah fleet could be detected moving using Indorra, this information immediately transferred to the appropriate command, and the necessary action taken. It would alter the course of the war & ensure the UFP survived.

The third is named after a previous Human code breaker. Code named Enigma2, NGW specialists developed technology from BigEar to intercept Zargah communications & decode approximately 50% of the messages captured. It gives the UFP invaluable information as to Zargah strategy & tactics. Its major drawback, however, is a limited range of 25 light years.

President John Locke is narrowly re-elected. In his acceptance speech at the Acropolis, he praises the millions who have been sacrificed in order that Earth lives on. Looking over the UFP capital, he pronounced: "I would have you day by day fix your eyes upon the greatness of Athens, until you become filled with the love of her; and when you are impressed by the spectacle of her glory, reflect that this [federation] has been acquired by men who knew their duty and had the courage to do it, who in the hour of conflict has the fear of dishonour always present with them, and who, if they ever failed in an enterprise, would allow their virtues to be lost to their country, but freely gave their lives as the fairest offering which they could present at her feast." He was of cause quoting Pericles, who some 2 800 years earlier during another long period of war, stood in the same spot giving the same speech while Athens’ enemies were at her gates.

2203 Armed with the latest & exact information on the deployment of Zargah forces, UDF overhauls its tactics. 2nd, 4th, & 8th Fleets are broken up into small task forces numbering no more than 10 ships each. The task forces, knowing where the Zargah are, begin raiding missions behind the main lines. Small patrols, convoys, anything that can be guaranteed a victory, albeit it small, is attacked. When major Zargah units begin pursuit operations, the task forces easily escape, thanks to knowing exactly where the Zargah are. The Zargah never discover the truth behind UDF success during this period.

In the occupied territories, UFP citizens began organising partisan groups operating with UDF special forces. Now that BigMouth, Indorra, & Enigma2 were fully operational, a small number of modified FreeStars began shuttling special forces personnel to occupied planets. Although many of the special forces members were killed, many managed to contact local populations. Soon small scale skirmishes occurred where possible. Many partisans where killed, but for every one that fell, five others took their place. Before the Zargah knew it, the remaining fleets & unoccupied planets of the UFP were not the only enemy - the latest major one were the partisans behind the front lines.

2204 UDF introduces more new tactics. Thanks to intelligence supplied by Indorra, the two UDF fleets that remained concentrated (3rd & 9th) begin sweep operations. Only small Zargah patrols are engaged, ensuring the elimination of the Zargah force. Although the UDF usually looses three ships for every one of the enemy, the Zargah defeats begin to mount up. The first such action sees a small Zargah task force eliminated at Nirvana by the 9th Fleet.

Although the Zargah begin facing small set backs, it appears that victory is almost certain. As a result, reinforcements are reduced. Although current Zargah numbers are maintained, it becomes clear to UFP that there will be no more increases to the invaders forces for the moment. UFP has two years, thus, to conduct major offensive action before the Zargah can replace any losses & reassert the offensive initiative.

President John Locke, armed with this knowledge, begins negotiations for the Freedom Federation (FF) & the Coalition of Independent Planets (CIP), to enter the war & secure the old Military Restriction Zone (MRZ). Not only would the Zargah face two new powerful enemies, but the two UDF fleets currently there would be released for offensive action. The negotiations get no where fast. UFP are on their own.

Life continues to be hard on Earth. 12 billion, now going onto 13 billion, do as best as they can. Importantly, the population remains calm, and above all resilient. Entertainment, work, & daily life continues, although tension is constant. Battles between fighters & frigates continue along the Great BlackStar Wall, and casualties keep mounting. But this is the kind of war Earth can sustain indefinitely. It has the population & industrial base to supply the pilots, crew & vessels. Although the Zargah have managed to commence small ship production at Eden, Vargary & Drey, their personnel must come from 1000 light years away. Furthermore, even though sabotage receives the death penalty, slave workers at the dockyards deliberately ensure that up to 50% of fighters & frigates built, suffer continuous malfunctions, making them useless in battle. Many a Zargah frigate suffers reactor explosions destroying the ship, just as they begin combat with UDF ships. Sadly, thousands of slave workers are executed as a result.

2205 The Utopia Interception. UDF 2nd Fleet concentrates its task forces & intercepts a major convoy of 256 ships & 15 escorts heading for Utopia. Sheer firepower & numbers ensures that the convoy is eliminated for the loss of 14 UDF ships. It is the first time UDF has ventured so far into occupied territory. An estimated 1 million Zargah troops & crew are killed in the action. Within minutes of the victory, the 2nd Fleet splits up & disappears before Zargah forces arrive.

In retaliation for The Utopia Interception, 1 million of Eden’s prisoners-of-war are executed. Civilian survivors from Eden testified later that the executions continued for a month as thousands were killed daily.

The Zargah furthermore decide to increase their offensive action. Their plan is to finish the war by 2210.

2206 In further revenge forThe Utopia Interception, the Zargah are determined to crush the 2nd Fleet. Their intelligence mistakenly, however, leads them to think that the UDF has a secret base at Barrens. They know it is not Locus as the small observation force there reports no activity in the area. Zargah concentrate large forces in the Barrens system, but never find the mythical base.

Continuing the offensive program, Zargah patrols are sent from Australis towards Lyonies territory. Although these patrols do not reach Lyonies, UDF is concerned. Needless to say, defence preparations are well in hand. Zargah also begin patrolling the old MRZ more intensely. UDF concludes that major offensive action by the Zargah will recommence soon.

The "space train" at Saturn Prime is still functional. Like with the Humans before then, the Zargah use the planet & the "space train" for recreation. Humans have been pressed into service for the Zargah Empire. Among them are the technicians of the "space train". As the sabotage campaign becomes more organised in the occupied territory, the partisans have gained in daring. So it was with the "space train". As off duty Zargah troops enjoyed the "train" one day, at a set time, all 10 trains currently running had gear failure. The trains left the rail & went smashing into the planetary rings killing all the Zargah. In retaliation, the entire technician team were executed on the spot. But the 16 technicians took 500 of the invaders with them as their toll.

2207 Word got out about the "space train". The 16 technicians became martyrs & revenge was sought. The 2nd Fleet task forces combined, & knowing the Zargah fleet was at Barrens, attacked Saturn Prime. The Zargah garrisons & bases were overwhelmed & decimated in the process. Before Zargah forces could respond, the UDF withdrew & disappeared into space. Albeit a small victory, it was another important boost for UFP morale.

In the Presidential elections, Debra Chifley of Australia defeated Indira Jodhpores of India. In her acceptance speech, as the sun shone on the Acropolis & the blue sky obscured the dangerous enemy above, the new President stated: "I try to think of Earth, not being about putting an extra dollar in someone’s pocket, or electing a President, but as an ideal bringing something better to the People, better standards of living, greater happiness to all. We are currently engaged in a great struggle for our future - yet we must never forget our true mission. There is a great objective: we must be the light upon the hill - which we aim to reach by working for the betterment of all life, not only here on Earth, but anywhere we may give a helping hand."

There was polite applause from the audience. Later that day, Chifley said to the retiring UFP President John Locke, "that speech of mine was awful, not the way to start". Locke replied, "Never, in ten years, did I get near the centre of the issue, as you did in one minute".

2208 Zargah begin offensive sweeps towards Omega. The first sweeps miss Omega by only 5 light years. Knowing that the Zargah fleet chasing them is currently the most powerfully one, the UDF 2nd Fleet decides to evacuate to Fin.

Another Zargah Task Force conducts a small offensive sweep towards Phoenix. 9th Fleet intercepts the 33 Zargah ships & give battle. Although the Zargah force is eliminated, 87 UDF ships are destroyed in the battle.

Other Zargah forces surprise the UDF & move on Lyonies in force. It is a two pronged movement, involving Zargah ships from Australis & Barrens. However, these movements are detected by Indorra & the UDF acts accordingly. The 3rd Fleet withdraws to cover & fortify Inloy, while 8th Fleet task forces rush back & concentrate at Lonclu. Lonclu, like the other two Lyonies planets, is fortified.

2209 In the latest patrolling action, the Zargah discover an evacuated Omega. Their land forces immediately occupy the planet facing no opposition. Although the Zargah are not aware of Fin’s location, they suspect there is at least one more planet of the UFP somewhere along the rim.

Zargah surround Lyonies & begin the siege. Furthermore, their patrols discover location of both Lonclu & Inloy. Accordingly, Zargah send large task forces to both planets to begin siege operations

2nd Fleet begins offensive operations once again using the task force method. Their aim is to weaken the Zargah forces in the Lyonies region. Several convoys are intercepted & eliminated. If successful, the 3rd & 8th Fleets will attempt to counterattack the Zargah task forces facing them, which they outnumber two to one, and move on the larger force at Lyonies.

Battles around Earth begin in earnest. Instead of a few frigates & a few squadron of fighters skirmishing everyday, now hundreds of small vessels constantly battle around the minefields. A few BlackStars detonate as result, vaporising ships from both sides. The Zargah take special note.

The mines are impossible to see, until up close, & are stealthy in their design making long range detection almost impossible. Spy probes have been deployed & their sensors have identified the BlackStars’ presence, but exact location remains a problem. This situation has always ensured Earth remained free. After the Zargah experience with minefields at Eden, they are certain Earth has even denser ones: ones that would ensure the destruction of their fleet. However, the actions this year, particularly the detonation of BlackStars, began a series of plans that developed into a possible scenario for future action. The Zargah code named it Counter Black One. UDF, thanks to Enigma2, has a good idea what it is all about.

2210 Lyonies, Inloy & Lonclu are all under siege. 3rd Fleet is bottled up at Inloy, while 8th Fleet is decimated while trying to break its way out of the Zargah blockade around Lonclu. Only 23 ships make it to Fin. The Zargah casualties are also high, but the remaining force of 19 ships manage to breach the BlackStar minefield. Their land forces immediately invade. Land battles rage across the planet as a stalemate occurs. Amazingly the civilian Lyonies, normally noted to be terrified by violence, remain calm throughout this period of ground warfare.

Small Zargah fleets, larger than the previous task forces, move into the old MRZ. 4th Fleet tries to slow them down through its task forces operating behind the front lines. Phoenix is bypassed, but D1 comes under siege. 9th fleet falls back to Nirvana.

Counter Black One is attempted. The Zargah have deployed 30 old cruisers, vessels capable of fighting off fighters & FreeStars into six waves of five ships. They are manned by a skeleton crew of volunteers. All the crew members know they will die. But they will become martyrs & worshiped throughout the Zargah Empire.

The cruisers move in. All the waves are 20 000km apart. Their aim is to force a breach through the Great BlackStar Wall. The first wave of cruisers soon get sucked into a black hole as a BlackStar detonates. The next wave rushes forward, only to meet the same fate. Again the third reaches the next line of BlackStars only to be vaporised.

It appears that the Zargah will do it as the forth wave takes the third waves place. The Zargah fleet moves forward with anticipation. Then the UDF trap is sprung. Although UDF did not know the exact details, they knew enough. A counterattack had been developed since Counter Black One was discovered. The results were devastating. UDF FreeStars & destroyers, which had deliberately held back hiding behind the small battlecruiser & cruiser force making up 1st Fleet attack. All have been modified to carry one BlackStar missile each.

Considering the Zargah Counter Black One suicide cruisers are older models & under crewed, it only takes one missile to obliterate each wave. The hits do not even need to be close, as no Zargah fighter screen is surrounding the old cruisers due to the very nature of their mission. Soon all the old cruisers are destroyed. Counter Black One has failed. The Zargah do not even attempt to advance their fleet to engage, knowing it is useless.

Earth celebrates her first major victory. President Chifley awards the UFP Congressional Medal of Honour to the entire counterattack force. Sadly 40% of the Medals are awarded posthumously. Yet, the Zargah wait at the wall, more determined than ever.

2211 Furious at having Counter Black One failed, the Zargah leadership demand a victory. In doing so, their admirals devise a trap to destroy the UDF 2nd Fleet. By faking a withdrawal of major forces from Omega, its hoped that the 2nd Fleet may raid the remaining Zargah forces. This has been 2nd Fleet’s reaction over the years. Thus the plan is put in place. A large force, although not too large, is left at Omega. If the UDF fleet was going to attack, it would require the whole 2nd Fleet.

The Zargah move on Nirvana. Although Nirvana has been fortified by the 9th Fleet, the planet is soon under siege. The 9th Fleet, as a consequence, is bottled up in Nirvana. Only the 4th Fleet is the only fighting force left that can conduct operations.

President Chifley opens negotiations with the FF & CIP. Although both reply they grieve for the UFP, but citing the current situation militarily, neither believe that they can do much to change the situation. Both argue it would only invite a Zargah offensive against them, which would ensure their complete occupation. After all, neither have BlackStar. Both, however, open their borders to refugees with no conditions. Furthermore the FF agree to supply non-military aid to the old MRZ.

Admiral Mullin falls for the Zargah trap at Omega. Likewise the UDF, desperate for an offensive to relieve the pressure virtually everywhere, demand action. Mullin, thinking that Omega could be attacked & possibly liberated, concentrates 2nd Fleet at Fin. Along with the remnants of 8th Fleet, 2nd thus attacks Omega. Just as the small Zargah task force is being overrun, the main Zargah force arrives. Immediately Mullin orders a retreat. However, the UDF fleet is surrounded and the Zargah move in for the kill.

Just as it looked it was the end of the UFD fleet, an enormous space vessel appears behind the main Zargah fleet. It is the size of Earth’s Moon & thoroughly dwarfs even the largest Zargah battleship. Without warning it opens fire on the Zargah fleet. The firepower is unprecedented. Before the Zargah can offer any replies, the entire fleet of 407 ships of various classes, is eliminated. Not one Zargah vessel survives.

Mullin, in fact no one in the UDF fleet, had any idea what to do. Everyone was stunned as they stared at the enormous ship, which became classified as War-Station. A simple message is detected by the UDF fleet. It states: "Follow me if you wish to live." And with that, the War-Station headed for Lonclu.

Word finally reaches Zargah high command about the massive defeat at Omega. There are no details. Certainly the intervention by War-Station is not reported. The Zargah have no idea what occurred. The theory is that the UDF may have deployed a massive BlackStar minefield and somehow trapped their fleet as a result. They could not have been more wrong. Signals are sent for reinforcements from the empire. Offensive action, as a result of the defeat at Omega, becomes limited.

2212 2nd Fleet & the War-Station arrives at Lonclu & immediately battle is given. The War-Station vaporises most of the Zargah force, while 2nd Fleet attacks the rest. After the battle, the 2nd finds two Zargah ships, one cruiser & a battleship, severely damaged & unable to return fire. Admiral Mullin sees an important opportunity & orders a cease fire. This is the first time UDF has had an opportunity to capture a Zargah ship & he was not going to miss out.

The marines are ordered in. Boarding commences. The fighting is savage. Without warning the cruiser explodes. 10 000 UDF marines are killed in the explosion. Its crew had managed to self destruct its engines. On the battleship, however, the UDF marines manage to secure the engine room. A long & costly battle continues throughout the rest of the ship as Mullin sent everyone he can spare to support the marines. After 12 hours of battle, the battleship is finally taken. 14 328 UDF personnel are casualties. There were no prisoners.

As UDF reinforcements head for the surface of Lonclu, the fleet celebrates its victory. Not only has the 2nd Fleet had two signifcant victories now, thanks mostly their mysterious ally, but they have captured an invaluable prize.

Soon the Zargah are defeated on Lonclu. As victory celebrations begin on the surface, millions look up into the sky & notice they have a new moon. All are amazed & stunned by the War-Station. It is not long before they call it their saviour - as indeed it was. The name stuck & became the official code name for the race that operated the terrifying ship.

The Zargah, however, were not celebrating. In fact they panic. Soon after discovering that their space & ground forces have been defeated, they withdraw from Inloy in order to concentrate their forces at Lyonies. UDF personnel in the meantime, swarmed over their prize. The technology, though, was too far advanced for ship’s engineers. NGW is needed.

Cautiously the 3rd Fleet came out from behind the BlackStar minefields. Coordinating with 2nd Fleet, both advanced on Lyonies. The War-Station, as previously, led the way. The Zargah were not aware of the enormous vessel until it was too late. As the 3rd Fleet came from the rear, the 2nd headed for the front lines of the enemy. It was all over before the Zargah knew what hit them. Those Zargah in the reserve turned & fled, right into the 3rd. Battle was desperate, & the 3rd suffered tremendous casualties, but numbers told. The reserve, like the main Zargah line, was eliminated. All Lyonies territory was free.

On a high of these victories, President Debra Chiefly was re-elected. The UFP, for the first time since 2190, finally looked like it might survive. No one, however, knew what the future would hold.

Zargah high command is shocked by the Lyonies debacle. For two years straight now, they have suffered massive defeats & there is no exploration. Again, they get little detail. Again, there is no report that involves the War-Station.

2213 Zargah reinforcements begin arriving from 1 000 lights years away. Soon their numbers recover to pre-2211 levels.

The Lyonies scientists spent day & night analysing everything on the captured battleship, but like the UDF engineers, they discovered little. NGW was needed & needed now. The only problem was, D1 was under siege. A sizeable Zargah fleet had gathered at D1 knowing how important NGW was for the UFP. President Chiefly decided that a desperate plan was required. The 4th Fleet would attack.

Saviour’s War-Station continued to orbit Lyonies on guard against the Zargah. Several attempts were made by the diplomatic corps to land on the War-Station, but their shuttles were all gently nudged away. Clearly Saviour was here to help, but not open dialogue. Considering the extremely advanced technology of Saviour, UFP were still children in comparison. Any technology transfer could have serious consequences for the junior races.

The 2nd Fleet underwent a quick refit, gained reinforcements & returned to Fin. It would continue the war from the rim. The shipyards at Lyonies, Inloy & Lonclu worked at an insane pace building ships to get the 3rd & 8th Fleets operational again.

NGW fitted out a brand new Improved Invincible battlecruiser, UDF Insufferable, for the forth coming action. At the appointed time, the entire 4th Fleet attacked the much stronger Zargah fleet at D1. The first wave was decimated, as was expected, & the rest of the fleet withdrew with the Zargah following. Only a few Zargah ships remained at D1. When it was considered the time, the defenders of D1, who had built up a considerable force, attacked the remaining Zargah. Seeing that a major attack was being mounted against them, the Zargah covering force withdrew. The Insufferable immediately left D1 at high speed for Lyonies. It would be the most important mission that the Insufferable would ever undertake.

The rest of the 4th Fleet escaped as best it could, but had lost two thirds of its number. Hearing that their covering force was under attack, the Zargah ceased the pursuit & returned to D1. They were never aware that the Insufferable had left.

Insufferable completed its journey in record time. Her captain was ordered to set her engines at flank & then make her go faster. Speed was the issue, they needed to get the NGW team to Lyonies. They were to stop for nothing. If Zargah ships tried to catch them, the Insufferable would have to go faster. Thankfully the Zargah never discovered Insufferable’s mission & she arrived intacked.

The NGW team immediately went to work. Although it took time, the Zargah’s secrets slowly revealed themselves. Top of the list was weapons, & more importantly how to build them.

2214 It was like the heady days of 1983 again. Scientists going back to the drawing board. The best experts going back to school. Like in 1983, no one really knows exactly how this advanced technology works, but through trial & error, the NGW team slowly get the Zargah equipment working. More importantly, they figured out how to manufacture the weapons systems & prototypes were built.

The Insufferable was used as their first test bed. Amazingly the Invincible class, albeit with modifications, were most suited to accommodate the new weapons. Unfortunately the first test of the new, & extremely powerful weapons, was a disaster. Out on the testing range, the Insufferable exploded killing its crew. It was an unjust ending to the heroic ship that saved the UFP. Another Invincible had to be refitted.

Apart from the continuing skirmishing on or around Earth, Barrens, & Utopia, all else remains quiet. Both sides are busy consolidating & rebuilding their forces. As a result, the Zargah forces in the old MRZ are withdrawn to back to Earth’s original 25 light year "sphere" border. A patrol screen is left here, while the remainder are rushed to support other fleets to defend against any possible UDF offensives. There none for now.

2215 The UDF India was the next ship used as a test bed. The mistakes of the Insufferable were learnt & the tests successful. It was noted, however, that the firing power was only two thirds that of comparable Zargah ships. Apparently the Invincible’s power systems simply lack the energy. Nonetheless, all current Invincible ships would be modified. However, a new class, incorporating the required improvements, would have to be built.

To save construction time, the Invincible class design was modified & a variant thus produced. This variant, the Victory class battleship, was authorised, ordered & built in record time. The future depended on it. NGW may not have found their miracle weapon, but it was the next best thing.

Zargah reinforcements continue to arrive from their Empire. Zargah numbers are higher than ever before. Other than skirmishing, however, no offensive action takes place by either side.

2216 UDF Victory, the class leader, came off the production line in record time. It took a mere one year & one day to construct. The normal time to construct such a ship was three years, but the UFP did not have that luxury. The Lyonies shipyards had performed miracles. Soon other shipyards around the UFP at Earth, D1 & Renaissance built new battleships joining the Victory. If the Zargah could be held at their lines for another year or two, the UFP would have enough of the new ships to match the Zargah.

Zargah spy probes & observation groups noticed that a new class were coming out of the shipyards. But considering the new ships appearance resembled the Invincible class, they assumed that it was just the latest model & nothing to concern themselves with. How wrong they were.

At the end of the year, with the Victory class being built in record numbers, & every Invincible ship being refitted, Saviour thought all was well. In a brief message to Lyonies command, the War-Station left its orbit around the planet. Many had become used to their new moon & did not want it to leave. But it was not their decision to make. No one knew why Saviour had saved them. No one knew why Saviour left. The War-Station was never to be seen again.

The Zargah try a scaled down version of Counter Black One this time deploying old, but fast frigates. Again the plan is discovered by Enigma2 & 1st Fleet was alerted. The result for Counter Black Two was the same as previous breaching attempt - total failure.

Elsewhere the Zargah has a successful campaign. The screening force on the old 25 light year border had been refitted & back to fleet size. Although skirmishes had occurred along the border with 4th Fleet forces, neither side conducted any major action. The Zargah, now though, advanced back into the MRZ. Their objectives were three dead planets, D4, D5 & D8. Although a limited offensive, the aim was to establish bases there for future conquests. The Zargah faced no opposition from the UDF.

2217 In the year the UDF began the long fight back, President Chifley had to retire. She had overseen the dark days & cemented the foundation from which victory was certain. The German Presidential candidate Andrea Shultz defeated the Chinese candidate John Chuan.

President Shultz’s first action was to begin negotiations with the FF & CIP. This time, with a few victories in hand, the FF & CIP were more open to discussion. The sticking point came, however, over the transfer of BlackStar & Victory class technology. Here the UFP would not budge. Thus, as had happened previously, both the FF & CIP declined to become involved militarily.

The Zargah had recovered from its losses of previous years. Now stronger than before, a four stage plan was developed. The first objective was to retake Omega, destroy the UDF 2nd Fleet & occupy the last remaining planet until unknown. Logic suggested that it must exist & thus be 2nd Fleet’s base. The second was a successful invasion of Earth. The resources being held in place at Earth, it was argued, was the main reason for the Lyonies debacle. The Zargah they were thin there & put their defeat down to overwhelming numbers of the enemy. The third was, after the second objective being successful, a return to Lyonies territory & conquest. Finally, conquest of the old MRZ would finish off the remaining UFP.

The Zargah Fleet at Barrens, rebuilt over the years, advanced on Omega. Admiral Mullin gathered what he could of the 2nd Fleet in order to defend Omega. No one really knows why he chose to attack the large Zargah fleet. He did not have the fire power & he certainly did not have the numbers. Yet he did. Some speculate that he was expecting Saviour to intervene again. Alas for him & half the 2nd Fleet, Saviour did not. Mullin’s force was decimated. Only 6 UDF ships survived. Unfortunately, the Zargah tracked these ships back to Fin.

2218 What remained of the 2nd Fleet concentrated at Fin. Fin, like the other unoccupied planets of the UFP, had been turned into a fortress. Its population too had swelled from about 100 000 in 2190 to about 75 million currently, of whom about 5 million were Drey. United Health Service (UHS) warned that food & water was their main concern on Fin, but no one starved. The refugees on Fin, however, had no where else to run.

The Zargah move on Fin. They find, not surprisingly, large BlackStar minefields supported by the 2nd Fleet. Cautious not to repeat the mistakes at Lyonies, their fleet remains concentrated. Only a handful of frigates are sent on flank patrols. The siege of Fin begins.

President Shultz orders the UDF to do something about Fin. All know that food & water, unlike on Earth, will not last forever. It is calculated that supplies, even on half rations, will only last a year.

UDF, now with enough Victory class ships in Lyonies territory to refit a complete fleet, reorganise their forces. NGW too has been producing Victory class ships as fast as possible. Likewise the Renaissance shipyards had begun construction of the new class. The result was, UDF numbers were slowly approaching pre-war levels. The reorganisation witnessed two fleets being reconstitute, the 5th at Lyonies & the 6th at Renaissance. The 4th had been refitted at D1 while the 9th had transferred its base to Nirvana. The list is as follows:

1st Fleet - Earth
2nd Fleet - Fin
3rd Fleet - Lonclu
4th Fleet - D1 NGW
5th Fleet - Lyonies
6th Fleet - Renaissance
8th Fleet - Lyonies
9th Fleet - Nirvana

NGW on D1 during this period continued with development. After the success with the Victory class, & the refitting of the Invincible class complete, a completely new battleship design based on Zargah technology was finalised. It was called the Dragon class. It was twice as powerful as the Victory class. Unfortunately it would not be ready for some years to come.

2219 As the Zargah starve the population of Fin, their main fleet tries to attack Earth once again. In Counter Black Three, multiple attacks occur, involving the now familiar suicide waves. Each wave this time constituted a core of two old cruisers &, on each flank, an old but fast frigate. It was an excellent plan & brilliantly executed. Fortunately for Earth, again Enigma2 had discovered enough of the details & so that a counterattack had been planned. Although the fighting was savage, and the UDF units suffered heavy losses, the Zargah attack failed.

Hot on the heels of Counter Black Three, the new UDF 5th Fleet went on the offensive. Fitted out with Victory & Upgrade Invincible classes, & supported by "standard" ships, the 5th attacked the Zargah at Fin. It was an extremely risky affair, considering the 5th Fleet had to cross 105 light years of space without being detected. The Zargah helped in their own defeat by not anticipating such an attack. They also were not excepting the firepower of the Victory & Updated Invincible class ships. The battle was savage. Casualties extensive. But the Zargah were forced to retreat. Although the 5th Fleet had suffered 50% casualties, the Zargah losses had been worse. UDF had its first true major victory without any direct help. Furthermore, the Zargah were now aware of UDF’s new firepower.

After two defeats, the latter one being serious, significant Zargah reinforcements were called for.

2220 After the Zargah defeat at Fin & Earth, the Zargah consolidated their positions. Desperation forced the Zargah to consider drafting "suitable" UFP slaves into their military forces. It was a miserable failure. When these conscripts had the chance, either they would escape and/or kill their Zargah officers. On one occasion, a mutiny aboard a Zargah destroyer was successful & the slave conscripts got to Fin to surrender. They were warmly welcomed back as free citizens of the UFP.

The information gathered from the escapees was invaluable. It confirmed without a doubt what the special forces & resistance groups had been reporting. Now was the time to counterattack before reinforcements arrived.

The first UDF offensive involved the 3rd Fleet. Its objective was to attack the Zargah fleet at Australis, force it to withdraw & liberate the planet. The battle was savage, but the Zargah were ready, thanks to vigilant patrols. Unfortunately the 3rd had to withdraw. But the Zargah were too weak to offer any pursuit. It was, nevertheless, a Zargah victory.

The 5th Fleet advanced on Omega. Although battle was to be avoided, the Zargah were in an aggressive mood and attacked. The 5th, still weak from the battle last year, withdrew to Fin. The Zargah Admiral, anticipating a trap, did not pursue.

The UDF offensive in the old MRZ, however, was totally successful. Out numbering the Zargah three to one, with many Victory & Upgraded Invincible class ships leading the way, the Zargah had no chance. The UDF 4th Fleet moved on D8, the new 6th Fleet moved on D5 & the 9th Fleet moved on D4. Although the battles were savage, the Zargah were over run. Only a few ships escaped to warn their fellows. The Zargah rushed what they could from their Earth invasion fleet to the old 25 light year "sphere" border to cover any approach to Earth.

2221 Earth Is Saved! Before Zargah reinforcements could be deployed, the UDF attacked where they could again. Coordination with resistance groups was a major aspect this year, as it was hoped that increased partisan action would ensure many Zargah reinforcements would never reach the front lines.

The 5th Fleet attacked Omega. In support was the 2nd Fleet. Although the 2nd still contained older classes, it still conducted a sterling job. As the 2nd engaged the main Zargah fleet, the new 5th attacked the Zargah’s flank. The battle was over within an hour. Although the 2nd Fleet suffered more casualties than necessary, its sacrifices ensured victory. After celebrations on a liberated Omega, the "Gallant 2nd", as it had become know, withdrew to Lyonies for refitting.

At Australis it was the 8th Fleet’s turn. Again Zargah picket patrols gave the main Fleet enough warning. Battle was desperate. Despite ample numbers of Victory & Upgrade Invincible class ships, the 8th was forced to withdraw with similar numbers of casualties as the 3rd had the year before.

The three UDF Fleets in the old MRZ, advanced on the old 25 light year border. Upon reaching it, they effortlessly swept aside the Zargah patrols. Time had changed. Although few remember, 20 years ago the Zargah had done the same to the original UDF 10th Fleet. But that was ancient history now.

The massive combine UDF fleet, incorporating the 4th, 6th & 9th Fleets, continued onto Earth. The Zargah force, having been warned of the advance, withdrew to Eden. Having good intelligence on UFP’s new battleships, and knowing that the combined fleet outnumbered theirs two to one, it was considered unwise to offer battle at Earth - particularly when Earth was bound to attack as well with the 1st Fleet. Although incredibly weak in capital ships, its thousands of fighters, FreeStars & destroyers were just as deadly.

Celebrations erupted on the whole planet. It was said you could here the sounds of joy & happiness from orbit. Although finally saved after 25 years of an incredible siege, millions grabbed whatever transport that could, nevertheless, & took off for the MRZ. Billions of others, however, remained where they were with no intention of leaving. Earth was the safest planet in all of Creation.

2222 With Earth once again safe, albeit still in the front line, President Shultz was re-elected with a comfortable majority. It was hoped that this would be the final Earth only Presidential contest. With victories of late, many believed that all of the UFP would be liberated by the next election.

Earth’s shipyards, now that the small ship requirement had passed, began construction of Victory class battleships. Hulls for the Dragon class were also laid down for the first time. Similarly NGW on D1 began Dragon class construction. Other shipyards, however, continued with the Victory class.

The war continued. Although Zargah reinforcements were pouring in, they were not getting to where they had too. A large Zargah Fleet had concentrated at Sierra. It would be used as a blocking force for now. The Zargah hoped that they could use it to attack the UDF flank at Earth if given the chance. But, thanks to Indorra, UDF knew exactly its presences & kept forces on the alert on Earth’s flank.

UDF decided to have another go at Australis. It was the turn of the "Gallant 2nd", but with support from the 4th Fleet. As the 4th approached from Earth, the "Gallant 2nd" advanced from Lyonies. Again vigilant Zargah patrols picked up both UDF fleets. Outnumbered three to one, the Zargah admiral ordered a withdrawal to Eden. This was a brilliant tactical & strategic decision, even though it surrendered both Pacifica & Australis to the UFP. But the concentration of Zargah forces at Eden would ensure that any UDF attack would be suicidal.

Australis & Pacifica were both liberated. The damage to both planets was substantial - particularly to the environment. Although rehabilitation would take place, it would take years. The war took first priority.

2223 The Universe of Battle. As the previous year witnessed limited losses to UDF ships, UDF numbers increased as a result. Two further fleets were reconstituted, finally bringing the UDF back to its pre-war structure & numbers. Soon the Dragon class battleships would be joining the fleet, making it as strong as ever. It appears that President Alekseyev’s hollow promises of 25 years ago were indeed prophecies. Earth became the most defended & powerful planet as a result. Just like the Zargah may consider themselves safe at Eden, so too the UFP were now indomitable at Earth. The restructure is as follows:

1st Fleet - Earth
2nd Fleet - Australis
3rd Fleet - Lyonies
4th Fleet - Pacifica
5th Fleet - Omega
6th Fleet - Earth
7th Fleet - D1 NGW
8th Fleet - Lyonies
9th Fleet - Earth
10th Fleet - Earth

UFP continued issuing offensive orders to UDF. And the UDF was only happy to oblige. Knowing that the Zargah had lost the initiative, UDF had no intention of letting them get it back. Accordingly plans were put in place to attack Sierra & head for Vargary. The strategy was to take Vargary & cut the Zargah lines of communication there. Drey would be liberated next, again cutting Zargah’s communication & supply lines. The Zargah would be starved out & a real war of attrition begin, which only the UFP would win. It was an excellent plan. It is know as Operation Laager.

Unfortunately events would throw this strategy out the window. Utopia, which had continued fighting a partisan war claiming a million Zargah lives already, exploded in massive warfare. The Zargah, determined to conquer the planet & suppress the partisans, launched a full invasion into the planet’s National Parks. These had been used as a haven for millions of Utopians hiding from the invaders. They had also been used for bases in their personal war too. Millions of Zargah troops were involved in the offensive. Millions of partisans, old surviving UDF land forces & fresh UDF special forces were involved in the defence. Dinosaurs were also involved in the fighting, and used against the attackers were possible. It soon became obvious, however, that the Utopians would loose if not helped soon. What made the situation even more urgent was the genocide policy that the Zargah had openly declared for Ultopia.

Within days of the Zargah announcement, UDF decided to act. Immediately the 10th Fleet, consisting mostly of FreeStars, fast destroyers & carriers, with their fighters, demonstrated against the Zargah at Eden. The Zargah suspected a trap & stayed within their defensive perimeter. This merely played into UDF’s plan - the Zargah did exactly what they wanted. Then the 8th Fleet from Lyonies combined with the 5th Fleet & attacked Barrens. The Zargah offered limited battle & withdrew to Duel. The "Gallant 2nd" advanced & attacked Saturn Prime. The Zargah Fleet, anticipating an attack, fought hard, but finally withdrew to Utopia. This was unfortunate, but not unexpected. Barrens was liberated, however Saturn Prime was not. The "Gallant 2nd" merely orbited Saturn Prime, for they were expecting a counterattack from the massive Zargah Fleet at Eden.

The door, however, was open. Next came the 3rd Fleet. Through the gap created by the other UDF fleets, the 3rd advanced for Utopia. On its rimward flank, the 5th Fleet advanced on Duel. The 8th Fleet remained at Barrens to act as reserve.

The Zargah were thoroughly stunned by this onslaught. No where, it seemed could they stem the UFP advance. Immediately the Sierra force was ordered to advance on Earth, but when they arrived, they rapidly withdrew without a shot fired, when they saw the overwhelming force defending Earth. It was the correct decision.

Battle commenced immediately as the UDF fleets arrived at both Duel & Utopia. Neither side was willing to withdraw, particularly at Utopia. Finally the 5th at Duel was able to defeat the Zargah force, and its surving 18 ships withdrew completely to Drey. Frantic efforts to establish a strong defence line at Drey thus commenced. However, the 5th was exhausted as a result of the battle & remained at Duel. Land forces invaded Duel & battle commenced. Locus was once again joined to the rest of the UFP. It had been alienated since Duel fell in 2195. Although Locus was never invaded, its defences had been constantly built up. The majority of land forces were immediately transferred to Duel, which ensured a quick resolution. Duel had been liberated.

Fighting on & around Utopia was desperate. A stalemate developed both in space & on land. Neither side could resupply their ground forces as any attempt was intercepted by the other sides space fleet. This, however, suited the Utopians fine. Now their numbers could come into play, as the Zargah had no replacements. Both sides rushed reinforcements from where they could to continue the space battle. It was a particular desperate situation for the Zargah strategically, because defeat at Utopia meant Eden was almost surrounded.

2224 The space battle at Utopia continued. The UDF 8th Fleet arrives at Utopia, just in time to engage a new Zargah fleet. The stalemate continues. On the planet, the Utopians slowly get the upper hand. The Zargah are forced out of the National Parks. Their numbers are lowering. 50% of the planet is firmly in UFP hands.

The UDF 10th Fleet continues to demonstrate against the massive Zargah fleet at Eden. Some skirmishing occurs but the Zargah remain defensive. However, they do send a large task force to Saturn Prime. The UDF "Gallant" 2nd Fleet has been anticipating this attack & easily defeats it. The retreating Zargah survivors are not pursued.

Refugees begin to return to Duel & Barrens. Although only about a tenth of each planet’s pre-war population is involved, the rebuilding begins. Duel, in particular, is turned into a BlackStar fortress.

UDF establishes the 11th Fleet at D1 NGW. It is the first fleet to receive the Dragon class battleships. The 7th Fleet is thus released for offensive action. 1st Fleet also receives its first new battleship, the class leader UDF Dragon.

7th Fleet moves to planet D8. It will be involved with a major offensive next year know as Final Nail.

2225 Heavy fighting continues throughout the Utopian solar system. Replacement & re-enforements continue to arrive from both sides. However, the stalemate continues in space as neither side can get the upper hand. On the surface, it is a different story. Successful Utopian offensive action has liberated most of the Nature Reserves. Millions on both sides have died in the land battles, but the Utopians can replace their numbers from their surviving 1.2 billion population base, the Zargah cannot.

UDF commence Final Nail. It is a reduced version of the abandoned Operation Laager. Two fleets, the 7th & the 9th, advance to Sierra. The Zargah fleet has become stronger after their failed offensive against Earth & are only slightly outnumbered by the combined UDF fleet. As a result, the Zargah manage to hold the UDF fleet at first. But thanks to Indorra, the UDF takes a risk, and rushes the 6th Fleet from Earth to join the contest. Their numbers make the difference. The 6th arrives & immediately attack a the Zargah fleet’s flank. The Zargah rout & flee to Vargary space. UDF land forces invade the planet & battles commence. The fighting is savage, particularly when UDF troops discover at least half the original Sierra population has been killed during the occupation. The Zargah do not last long as a consequence.

2226 The combined UDF fleet finally pushes the Zargah away from Utopia. Veteran land forces are rushed from Duel to the planet. These, combined with the Utopians, overrun the last Zargah defences. Few prisoners are taken. Utopia is liberated. Upon hearing that Utopia had fallen to the UDF, the Zargah fleet withdraws to the defences at Drey. Urgent calls to Capital for reinforcements become more frantic. It is a bad year for the Zargah.

Zargah fleet attacks Sierra from Vargary. The battle is extensive. The Zargah withdraw with heavy casualties.

Elsewhere the Zargah are quiet. At Eden, the Zargah are content to remain within their defences. Plans are, however, made for offensive action soon. It becomes known as Reclaim. For the first time, Enigma2 discovers little about Reclaim. UDF know something is happening, but they have no idea what it is.

2227 The Zargah at Eden launch a suprise attack from behind their defences. It is the beginning of Reclaim. The 10th Fleet is caught unawares. After being severely mauled, the 10th withdraws to Earth. It has suffered 50% loss. Earth prepares for attack. The 1st Fleet, now including Dragon & Victory battleships, gets ready to counterattack. It is not considered necessary to recall other fleets for Earth’s defence. And just as well.

The second step of Reclaim commences. Large Zargah task forces advance rapidly to Australis & Pacifica. However, Indorra tracks the Zargah forces & alerts the UDF defenders. The 4th Fleet is divided in half in order to defend each planet. When the Zargah arrive, a few shots are exchanged, then immediately withdraw to Eden. Meanwhile, a smaller Zargah task force heads for Omega. Unfortunately, even with Indorra, this task force intercepts & eliminates one convoy & creates havoc behind UDF lines. The "Gallant 2nd" sends a task force to give chase. A brief encounter takes place wherein the Zargah withdraw to Eden.

UDF cannot really understand these tactics, but consider this to be Reclaim. As a result, they conclude that the Zargah to be weak & commence an offensive themselves. 6th Fleet leaves Sierra for Vargary Prime. It is time to commence Operation Laager. Unfortunately, the 7th & 9th Fleets are still refitting at Sierra. Furthermore an Indorra installation has not been established on the planet. As a result, UDF do not know what is waiting for them at Vargary Prime. It is a disaster. 6th Fleet is immediately attacked as it arrives at Vargary. Outnumbered two to one, it has no chance. After suffering 25% casualties within minutes, the 6th Fleet rapidly withdraws to the safety of Sierra. The Zargah do not pursue.

UFP enjoys its first full presidential election. Although large areas of the UFP is still occupied, the elections are a major success. Two camps of thought fight it out. The "peace" camp are led by the Lyonies candidate Mi leessin. Although Mi Leessin is prepared to continue the war, a peace initiative is part his platform. It is a very noble & civilised approach, considering Lyonies have also suffered during the war. The Utopian Greg Murry, however, has no illusions about a peace initiative. Proclaiming "The only good Zargah is a dead Zargah!" Murry wins a comfortable victory & orders victories from the UDF.

In preparations for offensive action planned for next year, the UDF moves the 11th Fleet from D1 NGW to Sierra. A new 12th Fleet is thus established at D1 NGW.

Replacements continue to flow to the UDF fleets, particular those refitting at Utopia & Sierra. Shipyards everywhere construct Dragon & Victory class battleships. Although only a few fleets have the new Dragon class, the Victory class is predominate everywhere.

2228 Before the UDF can commence offensive action, the next phase of Reclaim smashes into the UFP. Sierra is the main objective, followed by Utopia. The overall objective is to breach the UDF lines around Eden. Even though the UDF has four fleets at Sierra, the Zargah attack regardless. The UDF at Sierra are caught unawares, as the Indorra station is not completed yet. The numbers are about even as 800 ships from either side battle it out. Casualties are high. The only thing that saves the UDF are the few Dragon battleships of the 11th Fleet. After suffering 60% casualties, the Zargah withdraw, even though they outnumber the surviving UDF ships. Not one of the Dragons were destroyed, yet all had numerous victories. Half of the Dragons, though, suffered sever damage.

Not long after the battle at Sierra has commenced, so too does battle recommence at Utopia. Here the Zargah forces were outnumbered, and after the attack on Sierra, the 3rd & 8th Fleets were on full alert. As a result, the Zargah had it hard from the start. Battle lasted about a month, but like at Sierra, they had to finally withdraw. They were fortunate that no Dragon battleships were serving at Utopia - yet.

A smaller Zargah fleet arrived at Duel, but was chased off by the 5th. A cat & mouse game continued between the two fleets that kept the 5th from supporting Utopia. However, when the Zargah force at Utopia withdrew, so did the one at Duel.

The only victory that the Zargah received was at Saturn Prime. A small Zargah fleet advanced on Earth to keep the 1st & 10th fleets busy, while a major fleet attacked the "Gallant 2nd" at Saturn Prime. Although the Zargah fleet at Earth was easily chased off, the "Gallant 2nd" had to withdraw. Apart from being outnumbered by the Zargah fleet, the Saturn Prime Zargah ground forces, which the "Gallant 2nd" ignored, continued to harass the "Gallant" fleet’s flanks. Considering it was a bad defensive position, the famous UDF fleet withdrew to friendly Barrens. It was fundamental that the rim corridor remained open so that the liberated planets & UDF fleets could receive supplies & humanitarian aid.

The Zargah Reclaim offensive had almost been successful. They decided to press on & try again.

2229 President Greg Murry opened negotiations with the CIP & FF. Although it was clear that the UFP was now winning the war, humanitarian aid was a problem. This time the negotiations were not about joining in the battles against the Zargah, but against the battle of starvation. Considering, during & after the Liberation War, the UFP supplied both groups with billions worth in aid, now the UFP was asking that the favour be returned. Although the negotiations were long, both the CIP & FF agreed. Millions of UFP citizens survived thanks to the aid from the CIP &FF.

The Zargah continued the Reclaim offensive & once again attacked everywhere. However, Indorra bases were fully operational on Sierra & Utopia. The UDF saw them coming days before the Zargah fleets arrived at their objectives. Their numbers too had dropped off & their fleets were, as a result, smaller. Again, Sierra was the main objective. But battle this time was short. Once the Zargah fleet realised they had no chance in succeeding, they quickly withdrew to Vargary. Casualties on both sides were light.

The same situation happened at Utopia. The Zargah withdrew to Drey. The Zargah heading for Duel were not as lucky. The 5th Fleet, noticing a distinct numbers advantage conducted their own counteroffensive and surprised the small Zargah fleet. The victory for the 5th fleet was impressive. Only 6 Zargah ships escaped back to Drey.

Again at Barrens, the Zargah met with defeat. The "Gallant 2nd", warned through Indorra, stoically defended the planet. Both sides had suffered 50% casualties. But the two Dragon battleships new to the "Gallant 2nd", ensured that the UDF fleet won the day. The Zargah withdrew to Saturn Prime.

2230 On most fronts, all remained quiet. Zargah casualties over the last two years ensured they could not conduct any offensive action. Several UDF fleets were not in much better shape, but it was imperative that Saturn Prime be retaken. The "Gallant 2nd" was too exhausted, so it was left to the 8th.

An almost full strength 8th Fleet thus attacked the weak Zargah fleet at Saturn Prime. As a diversion, the 10th Fleet, now refitted, advanced on Eden. It demonstrated against the Zargah forces there, but they remained within their defence perimeter.

The 8th Fleet’s attack was totally successful. The Zargah fleet, after a brief engagement, withdrew to Eden. Land forces invaded the planet, but a stalemate soon occurred. The Zargah had years to develop an excellent defence system. Utopian volunteers were rushed to re-enforce the UDF land forces & the situation soon changed. The fighting was savage & terrifying. The Utopians took no prisoners. UDF personnel were not much better. No one said anything over the mater.

In celebration of Saturn Prime’s liberation, the first Unified Olympics in 40 years was held. Although not as grand as pre-war events, Earth was more than pleased to host them. Teams were entered by all planets, although it was obvious that the teams from occupied planets were low in number & quality. Lyonies won the most gold medals, with the USA close behind & China next.

2231 The war continued, albeit slowly. Only skirmishing between the UDF 10th Fleet & the Zargah at Eden occurred. Zargah intentions were unknown, but intelligence suggested that the Zargah had heavily defended both Drey & Vargary space.

The Federation War Crimes Tribunal opened for its first hearings on Earth. Although it would be kept busy, considering few prisoners taken, cases were kept at a leisurely pace. The biggest case was against the Zargah military governor on Sierra. After having been captured, the UDF had interrogated him rigorously. After discovering little information, they handed him to the Tribunal. He refused to speak, even to defend himself. He was executed a month later. Everyone cheered.

2232 UDF commenced offensive action against the Zargah at Drey. Considering the action against Vargary Prime proved a disaster, Drey became the next choice. The offensive would involve four fleets, the "Gallant 2nd", 3rd & 5th Fleets. A new 13th Fleet was established at Lyonies for support and quickly rushed to Utopia. The 8th Fleet remained at Saturn Prime guarding their flank.

The Drey offensive was a massive undertaking. And the Zargah were expecting it. When the UDF force arrived, it soon became obvious battle would be extremely hard & long. Casualties in the first month were sever. Stalemate at Drey soon developed.

The Zargah tried to relieve the pressure on their forces at Drey by attacking Sierra. But as before, Indorra identified the Zargah advance & the UDF fleets defending Sierra easily repulsed the Zargah attack.

Even though the Drey offensive had not been successful yet, the victory at Sierra secured President Murry’s re-election. He vowed to "… take the war to the Zargah Empire" during his acceptance speech at the Acropolis. No one, however, knew how.

2233 President Murry approached the old UPX about its old long probes. He wanted to take up old President Alekseyev’s suggestion of sending the Zargah peace probes with "… a BlackStar mounted on the front of it". UPX replied that they would get together with NGW & started planning immediately.

Due to the war, UPX had almost ceased to exist. It had basically become a division of NGW, while its ship had been pressed into service in numerous roles, mostly troop & civilian transport. UPX’s small long range Discovery 2 class fleet had been used to shuttle what supplies & aid could be given by UFP’s distant friends. This mostly meant the Avakous who, after the siege of Earth began, were more than happy to send humanitarian aid. Although it was limited when compared to the aid from FF & CIP, it nonetheless kept Lyonies territory supplied for years. The Avakous also accepted about 10 000 orphaned refugees. Many would grow old never seeing their home planet ever again, having become Avakous.

The battle for Drey continued. Elsewhere, apart from the 10th fleet skirmishing at Eden, the Zargah remained quiet.

2234 UDF were informed of the UPX/NGW latest project. Their interest was, however, not attacking Capital, but the continuous convoys. If these could be disrupted, then it would only be a mater of time before the Zargah would have to capitulate. Information from the 10th Fleet had certainly confirmed this strategy, whereby Zargah forces surrounded at Eden clearly showed signs of degradation.

Drey continued to be battled for. Battle wreckage filled its solar system. Although both sides had lost about 400 ships each, the UDF had replaced most of these. Zargah replacements were half this number. The Zargah were clearly loosing the war of attrition, but were not defeated yet.

Elsewhere the Zargah remained quiet.

The Olympics were held on Nirvana. Again they were small. Nirvana won the most gold medals, followed by Utopia & China.

2235 The UPX/NGW long range missile project reports to President Murry informing him the weapon is ready. Its code name is Peacemaker. Peacemaker is the ultimate in missile weapon design. Although still vulnerable to modern countermeasures, against secondary defence platforms, particularly convoy escorts, it should be successful.

UDF will operate Peacemaker at it sees fit. Immediately the Zargah convoy lanes are targeted. As soon as Peacemaker numbers build up, the first attacks would begin.

The Drey offensive continues & the UDF fleets find a nasty surprise. As the Zargah have been pushed back toward the planet, massive minefields have been discovered. Although not BlackStars, they are nonetheless extremely powerful weapons thoroughly capable of destroying several battleships at once. The offensive once again becomes a stalemate as a result of the mine fields.

2236 Peacemaker makes life in the convoy lanes extremely difficult. Although the first attacks were successful, the Zargah have become well versed in countermeasures. Nonetheless, some Peacemakers get through to their targets obliterating entire convoys. Zargah supplies are cut in half as a result. reinforcements, like supplies, are also cut in half.

10th Fleet suggests to UDF that the Zargah at Eden are extremely weak. Many of their ships display damage due to lack of repair & maintenance. Few are fully operational. After President Murry hears of the reports, he orders an immediate attack.

UDF thus attacks. The 12th Fleet joins the 1st at Earth & advance to Eden. Here the 10th Fleet protects their flanks as these two powerful fleets engage the Zargah. When the Zargah are preoccupied with this combined fleet, the 8th Fleet arrives from Saturn Prime. Although the Zargah fight heroically, it is obvious this is not the grand fleet of previous years. Finally their defence collapses. Few ships surrender.

UDF land forces invade Eden. It soon becomes obvious that the Zargah ground forces are in much better shape than their space comrades & desperate battles occur. Even with the Utopian volunteers, stalemate quickly takes place on the surface.

The Zargah at Drey continue to hold out stubbornly. The UDF get no where.

After the limited success with the Olympics, the CC once again begins. Hosted on Earth, the local teams do well. UK defeats Germany 3-2 in the final.

2237 The Year of the Dragon. As Peacemaker continues to attack Zargah convoys, the 1st, 8th, 10th & 12th Fleets arrive at Drey. Before the attack begins, the Dragon battleships are grouped in squadrons, supported, in the same arrangement, by the Victory class. The attack commences with hundreds of old BlackStar missiles being fired into the minefields. Although most are destroyed before detonation, a handful reach their targets. A breach is made in the minefields & the Dragons attack. The Zargah fleet is virtually eliminated.

Some manage to escape to join up with small task forces at Duplak. Yet any defence of Duplak becomes meaningless as the 10th & 12th Fleets arrive in pursuit. The Zargah immediately abandon the planet which is immediately liberated. The local population, forced into slave labour, has mostly survived. Nonetheless celebrations break out as the local population revels in its freedom.

As land battles on Drey commence, the 1st, 3rd & 8th Fleets move on Evduc. The small Zargah fleet there foolishly offers battle. It is eliminated totally, for only a few casualties on the UDF side. Land forces immediately invade, & although the defence is strong, UDF numbers win the day. Evduc is liberated. A similar situation occurs as on Duplak, as the local population welcome their liberators.

The Zargah continue to hold out on Eden. All the UDF ground offensives are repulsed.

The presidential elections, in the year that is nicknamed the Year of the Dragon, successfully sees Chinese candidate Wendy Teisen defeat Malcolm Mitchell from Nirvana. President Teisen gives a full commitment to pursue the war to complete victory.

2238 The Zargah have been successfully pushed back to occupy only Vargary territory. But UDF have every intention of liberating all UFP territory. UDF plan for the final offensive into Vargary Space.

The Zargah on Drey are finally overrun. Among the victors are Drey volunteers from the two old Drey colonies. They ruthlessly cut down all Zargah, regardless if they are surrendering. Many a Drey has died at the hands of these invaders. Now it is the Zargah who in turn die. The Lyonies remain professional, but even they turn a blind eye to the revenge sought by the other races.

The battles on Eden continue. However, it becomes clear that the Zargah are loosing the war of attrition.

The Olympics are hosted on Renaissance. Again it is a small affair. The CIP & FF send teams. Utopia wins the most gold medals, followed by the locals & FF.

2239 Eden is finally liberated thanks to the transfer of land forces from the Drey offensive. The planet is devastated. The surviving UFP population is too. It is estimated that Zargah murdered at least 1 billion civilians. Some locals say it was 2 billion. The Humans are the most outraged. On one night, as an act of justice, the few Zargah prisoners that survived the fighting are killed in their cells. Only the Lyonies protest this action, but do not press their complaints.

The massive UDF Vargary offensive opens. Four fleets attack Vargary, while another four advance on Var’Dor. Battle is desperate, but the Zargah manage to hold on. Casualties are heavy on both sides.

Trade begins to return to normal as refugees begin returning to their home planets in greater numbers. Both Australis & Pacifica are reopened.

2240 Another four fleets enter the massive Vargary offensive. Vosher’Dor is attacked in this new phase. The small Zargah fleet is heavily defeated. Its remnants retire to Ni’Vil. All supplies & reinforcements to the Zargah forces at Var’Dor & Vargary Prime are thus cut off.

The Zargah abandon Var’Dor as a result & attack Vosher’Dor hoping to reopen the supply routes. Although at first successful, the pursing UDF fleets catch up with the Zargah fleet at Vosher’Dor. In the resulting battle the Zargah are virtually eliminated. He survivors retreat to Ni’Vil.

The Zargah continues to hold out at Vargary Prime.

UDF land forces invade both Var’Dor & Vosher’Dor. Although Vosher’Dor is quickly liberated, the Zargah provide a stubborn defence at Var’Dor. The same pattern is told by the locals as on Eden. Possibly 20% of the population have been murdered by the occupiers.

The CC is hosted on Lyonies. The Utopians defeat the locals 3-2 in the final.

2241 The last of the Zargah on Var’Dor are defeated. The Vargary take no prisoners. The same story, as elsewhere, is told about the occupation forces. The UDF are more determined than ever to defeat the remaining Zargah.

To try to support the Zargah defending Vargary Prime, several raids are conducted by the Zargah forces at Ni’Vil. Attacking Vosher’Dor proves to be useless, and the Zargah quickly withdraw. Other attacks against Evduc & Duplak are slightly more successful, but in both situations, the attackers are repulsed.

The Zargah continue to hold on to Vargary, but only just. Their casualties are sever. It is truly desperate.

Peacekeeper attacks continue on the convoys. These become much more accurate as an Indorra base opens on Vosher’Dor. Soon an Enigma2 base beings operations on the planet too.

2242 The UDF combined fleet at Vargary Prime bludgeons its way through the Zargah defences. Casualties are high, but the Zargah space fleet is eliminated. UDF land forces invade the planet, but stalemate soon occurs.

Indorra identifies that no more Zargah convoys are arriving. It appears that the Zargah have given up trying to run the Peacemaker gauntlet. The Zargah at Ni’Vil remain behind their defences.

After a successful pursuit of the war, President Teisen was re-elected.

The Olympics are held on Earth again. They have grown in size as more planets become liberated. It is a close contest that witnesses Russia narrowly win the most gold medals, followed by Utopia & Nirvana.

2243 Vicious battles continue across Vargary Prime. The Zargah are determined to hold on as long as possible.

Indorra again reports that no convoys are arriving from the Zargah Empire. As a consequence, UDF orders four fleets to attack Ni’Vil.

Although the Zargah fleet at Ni’Vil is substantial, it is outnumbered three to one. As a result, numbers tell & the Zargah fleet is defeated. The survivors flee across the border. UDF assumes they are heading home.

UDF land forces invade Ni’Vil, but like on Vargary Prime, stalemate soon occurs.

2244 The Zargah defence on Vargary Prime collapses. Many Zargah troops are killed in the process. Some prisoners are, however, taken. Again, the liberators are told of horrifying stories. It is estimated that 500 million Vargary were murdered during the occupation.

Before all Zargah resistance on Vargary Prime failed, word got out to the Zargah command on Ni’Vil. Next day, for the first time ever, the Zargah officially contacted the UDF. The communique simply requested surrender conditions. The only guarantee offered was they would keep their lives. The Zargah accepted the conditions the next day.

Millions of Zargah were now prisoners. No one really had any idea what to do with them. Only Lyonies troops would guard them, and several nasty events occurred when the Lyonies guards had to defend their prisoners from both civilians & military personnel wanting revenge.

The war, however, for the moment was over. Celebrations spread rapidly across the UFP. They were the biggest ever on record.

As part of the celebrations the CC was held on Drey. Amongst the ruins, it was a total success. The Drey were determined to ensure it was. In a miracle victory, the local team defeated Lyonies 2-1 in the final.

2245 A year after the victory it appeared life was returning to normal. Industry, trade, general life were returning to peacetime conditions. UHS reported, though, that millions lived in poverty. Just as many where homeless. In response, President Teisen announced the biggest rebuilding program ever on record. It would take years & cost trillions.

Having captured Zargah communication equipment, the UFP started to send the Zargah Empire demands for peace negotiations. Although at first there were no returning comments, after several communiques graphically documenting the total defeat of Zargah forces, a simple reply stated "No Peace".

President Teisen immediately reacted in anger. She demanded UPX/NGW to further develop Peacemaker in order to attack the Zargah Empire. Capital, it was decided, would become the target.

2246 Peacemaker2 was rapidly developed & thousands were ordered. Again UDF would be in command of the offensive.

UPX had decades ago located Capital’s position. It was hoped back then that this information would be used for peaceful purposes, but this had changed. War still existed & UFP was determined that the last 56 years would never be repeated. The UDF offensive was code named Operation Endgame.

The Olympics were hosted on Vargary Prime in celebration of the planet’s liberation. It was a great success as the Vargary, like the Drey, were determined to get over the impact of the war & welcome in the future. While Games went on, four UDF fleets patrolled the border. There were no incidents.

2247 Operation Endgame began as the first wave of Peacemaker2 were launched from Ni’Vil for Capital. Ni’Vil has been turned into a massive UDF base. In particular was the Peacemaker2 complex. Operation Endgame would see 1 200 Peacemaker2 missiles launched per year in 12 waves of 100. This would continue until a communique requesting peace negotiations came from the Zargah, or until it was assumed Capital was destroyed & the remaining Zargah wanted peace.

As life returned to normal, economic & social issues dominated the Presidential elections. The war party suffered its first major set back since the war began. The peace candidate Nichol De Valirra from Nirvana defeated George Hannah from Utopia.

Military funding was cut, but the current UDF structure & numbers was maintained. The fleets were particularly ordered to patrol the Vargary & Drey borders. Indorra funding, however, was increased to ensure no surprise attacks.

As a result of the military cut backs, more funds became available for reconstruction. Even with this increase it would take decades to recover to pre-war levels.

2248 In response to President Nichol De Valirra’s orders, UDF restructured the fleet. The 10th fleet returned to its pre-war duties as border patrol and covered the old MRZ & Lyonies borders. The 11th, 12th & 13th Fleets became reserve fleets based deep within UFP territory. The rest remained fully active. UDF restructure was as follows:

1st Fleet - Earth
2nd Fleet - Utopia
3rd Fleet - Lyonies
4th Fleet - Renaissance
5th Fleet - Drey
6th Fleet - Vargary Prime
7th Fleet - Vosher’Dor
8th Fleet - Evduc
9th Fleet - Ni’Vil
10th Fleet - Border Patrol
11th Fleet - Eden
12th Fleet - D1 NGW
13th Fleet - Barrens

The CC was hosted by Eden. The UFP covered the cost of the tournament as part of the rebuilding program. Some people complained that the money could have been better spent elsewhere, but the tournament was a great success nonetheless. Eden was triumphant supported by a huge home crowd. They defeated Utopia 2-1 in extra time.

2249 UDF continued with Operation Endgame. Nothing was heard from the Zargah. All was quiet.

As the economy got back on track, companies started returning profits, albeit small. It was the first sign that prosperity was slowly returning.

UHS reported the homeless population had almost disappeared. Although refugees still numbered in their billions, just as many had returned to their homes. UFP citizens living outside UFP territory, likewise, began slowly returning to their home planets. Many had been born outside of the UFP. Many emotional experiences were shared by these returning citizens.

2250 UFP was once again taking its place upon the galaxy’s stage. Peace, it seemed, was here to stay. Final victory was certain. Operation Endgame continued. Capital seemed to still exist & nothing had been heard from the Zargah, but that only ensured that the UDF remained vigilant.

Billions of UFP citizens had been killed in the war. No one actually knows the number, but its estimated at 4-5 billion.

The Olympics are hosted by Utopia. The size resembles the game enjoyed long ago. They are a complete success. The home side wins the most gold medals, followed closely by Russia & Eden.
